U.N. Security Council: declare a Global Climate Emergency
Dear U.N. Security Council Members,
Climate change is not a dramatic phenomenon that will happen in the faraway future. Climate change has already started destroying lives and our planet: more than 22.5 million people per year are forcibly displaced due to extreme weather disasters. By 2050, 140 million more will be added to that figure. Climate change is a ticking bomb that can only be disarmed if we work as One.
We marched, we struck, we screamed it on top of our lungs: our future is in jeopardy. It is not a matter of opinion, belief, religion nor education: overwhelming evidence proves that because of our actions, the world is in peril. We tried to push cities and countries to act, but the tide has not shifted. One alley remains: the global approach.
We, the people of this planet, are demanding that you recognize climate change as a threat to peace under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations, and as a result, declare a Global Climate Emergency and decide on measures to counter the climate crisis.
Climate change is an existential threat to the world, peace, and security. Your role is to create the conditions to allow peace to hold and flourish, so take responsibility and act.

YES YOU CAN!
Chapter VII of the Charter of the U.N. reads as follows: “The Security Council shall determine the existence of any threat to the peace, breach of the peace, or act of aggression and shall make recommendations, or decide what measures shall be taken in accordance with Articles 41 and 42, to maintain or restore international peace and security.”
This provision enables you to identify grave threats to humanity and to take action to protect peace and security. From “triggering or exacerbating conflict through its effects on livelihood security and resource availability” or simply representing “an urgent and potentially irreversible threat to human societies and the planet”, you can no longer ignore the existential threat that is climate change. A United Nations resolution under Chapter VII is normally considered binding, and would thus oblige all 186 member states to take concrete action following your decision. Following the declaration, we are calling on you to decide on measures in accordance with article 41 to counter the climate crisis.
To acknowledge that climate change is a threat to peace and thus declare a Global Climate Emergency, nine members of the U.N. Security Council will need to vote in favor of discussing this topic, and nine members of the UN Security Council (with 0 vetoes from the Permanent Five) will need to vote in favor of that resolution.
Nine of you have the power to change the fate of the world, what are you waiting for?
Once this petition has achieved substantial backing, we will launch petitions in front of each U.N. Security Council member’s parliament to double up the pressure on the decision-makers!
This global petition will stay open to harness support from all the people coming from countries that do not currently sit on the Security Council. When the global petition reaches a significant amount of signatures, it will be sent to the U.N. Secretary-General urging them to take action as well!
… A LAST NOTE:
We will not give up. You may not listen to us at COP, you may not listen to us while on the streets, you may not listen to our cry when climate-induced disasters are forcing us to flee, but the roar of the people will not go unheard. We will use our collective voice to push legislation bold enough to change the tide, from Shanghai to San Paolo, from Cape Town to London. We will ensure that you act, we will be the conscience this world has too often lacked, the will that should drive your actions.
And once this Emergency has been declared, we will fight to ensure that it is not used to abuse our fundamental rights and that the Global South is not penalized for the centuries of pollution that the Global North emitted. Solidarity shall prevail.
Dear U.N. Security Council Members,
Do the right thing for humanity. Declare a Global Climate Emergency and safeguard our future!
